Undervine Weeder and Vineyard Weeder: The Guide to Rinieri Mechanical Weed Control Equipment

Since 1920, Rinieri has been designing agricultural machinery that combines tradition and innovation to guarantee maximum quality and reliability.

What is an Undervine Weeder?

The term undervine weeder refers to specific equipment designed to eliminate weeds in the inter-row space (between plants) of vineyards, orchards, and olive groves. Unlike working the central row, managing the undervine area requires extreme precision to avoid damaging the plants.

The heart of this process is often the hoeing blade (or weeding blade), a tool that performs a shallow weeding action (horizontal cut) of the soil. This method stops weed growth by severing the roots without disrupting the deep soil structure. At Rinieri, we have perfected this system by combining the blade with a front furrow-opening disc, mounting this technology on various advanced frames such as the Turbo, Turbo Evo, Turbo Evo Lite, and ventral (mid-mount) versions.

How does a Rinieri Vineyard Weeder work?

The effectiveness of a Rinieri vineyard weeder lies in its advanced hydraulic and mechanical engineering.

  1. Combined Action: The machine is equipped with a toothed front disc and a hoeing blade (available in 50 or 70 cm or 19.7 in to 25.6 in ). The disc cuts into the soil, performing a slight earth removal; this "clears the way" for the blade, which penetrates the ground with its support shank.

  2. Clod Crushing: Specific devices (such as "butterflies" or clod breakers) are installed on the blade to lift and shatter the cut soil clod. This detail is crucial: by exposing the roots to air and sun, rapid drying is achieved, permanently stopping grass growth.

  3. In-and-Out Technology: The working unit is hydraulically controlled. A sensitive sensor rod detects the presence of the stock (the plant) and immediately retracts the blade to avoid impact, repositioning it immediately afterwards to ensure total cleaning.

  4. Oil Management: The machine can utilise the tractor's oil (if a flow of 30-40 litres/minute is available) or be equipped with an independent hydraulic system to ensure consistent performance even with less powerful tractors.

Product Range: Choose Your Undervine Weeder

We offer a vast range of configurations to adapt to every planting layout and soil type. Here are our flagship models:

Benefits of Mechanical vs Chemical Weeding

Why switch to a mechanical undervine weeder and abandon chemical herbicides?

  • Environmental Health: The main benefit is ecological. With our machines, pollution from herbicides is eliminated, protecting groundwater and biodiversity.
  • Soil Quality: Weeding is not limited to cutting grass. By working the top 8-10 cm (3.15 - 3.94 in) of soil, you aerate the ground and eliminate habitats for pests and small harmful insects that overwinter in the soil.
  • Universal Effectiveness: Our undervine weeders are effective against all types of weeds, including those resistant to herbicides.
  • Simplicity and Speed: Blade machines are known for low maintenance and high working speeds (up to 10 km/h or 6 mph), making them extremely competitive in terms of operating costs.

Which crops and soils can I use it on?

Our undervine tools are versatile. They are ideal for vineyards, orchards, and olive groves. They adapt to both flat and hilly terrain. Although they perform best on stone-free soils, Rinieri blades are built to operate even in the presence of stones, albeit with higher wear.

Spacing is not an issue: we can work even in very dense vineyards, with inter-plant distances as narrow as 50 cm (20 in).

Compatibility and Versatility

One of the strengths of the Rinieri system is modularity.

  • Multiple Implements: The Turbo and Turbo Evo frames allow you to dismantle the blade and attach other heads, such as the sucker remover, the plough, or the finger weeder. (the Turbo Evo lite and Turbo Evo can mount more equipments)

  • Reversible Drive: For those who own reversible drive tractors, our front-mounted machines offer unparalleled comfort and precision.

When is the best time to use it?

The undervine weeder is used throughout the growing season, typically from April to July, when the soil is dry.

Pro Tip: For a perfect result, use the machine when at least 2 days of sun and dry weather are forecast following the work. If it rains immediately after, the cut roots could re-establish; the sun, however, guarantees the complete desiccation of the weeds.

How do I set up the machine?

The setup is simple and intuitive:

  1. Depth: Adjust the rear wheels to achieve a blade working depth of about 8-10 cm (3.15 - 3.94 in) (enough to cut roots without disturbing the vine).
  2. Front Disc: Adjust it so that it does not exceed the depth of the blade.
  3. Feeler: You can adjust the sensitivity, height, and advance/delay relative to the plant. On delicate crops or young plants (rooted cuttings), the sensitivity of the feeler is fundamental to avoid damage.

Maintenance and Tractor Requirements

Maintenance is minimal. The main wear parts are the front disc and the blade, which last for years in optimal conditions (sandy or clay soils without stones). Soils rich in silicon or stones will accelerate consumption. For the tractor, it is ideal to have a pump with 30-40 litres/minute of oil flow. If not, we provide independent hydraulic power units. The machines are compatible with rear and front linkages and, in the case of ventral models, with specific brackets between the wheels.
