Rinieri Swing Arm Mower: the solution for effective and clean weed management

The Rinieri Undervie Mowing Wheel, also known as the Swing Arm Mower, is an high-efficiency solution for ecological weed management in vineyards and orchards. Specifically engineered to work in tight spaces, such as directly under the plant rows, this technology eliminates the need for chemical herbicides, safeguarding soil health and crop quality.

What is a Swing Arma Mower?

A Rinieri Swing Arm Mower is a professional cutting system that seamlessly integrates with existing farm machinery. The core of the system is composed of a pair of pivoting steel blades that rotate on a central axis. These blades are powered by an efficient hydraulic system that ensures consistent movement and cutting power.

The mechanism is ingeniously simple: as the machine advances, the mowing disc moves close to the plant trunk. Upon contact, a retraction system allows the disc to pivot away and pull back between the rows, only to immediately return to the working position, ensuring a precise and continuous cut around the base of the plant. We offer two main types of retraction systems:

  1. Spring-Loaded System: The basic model, ideal and recommended for use on flat terrain.
  2. Hydraulic Sensor rod (or 'Touch Arm'): The most sensitive solution, recommended for use on hilly or slightly uneven terrain. Furthermore, it is the suggested system when dealing with young plants, as its sensitivity can be adjusted to prevent any damage to the stem.

Product Range: Choose Your Swing Arm Mower

We offer a vast range of configurations to adapt to every planting layout and soil type. Here are our models:

Benefits, Applications, and Rinieri Models

The primary benefits of using a swing arm mower include effective mowing without the use of chemical herbicides, remarkable operating speed, and significant time savings. The main field of application of a  swing arm mower is cutting grass and weeds in specialized crops such as:

  • Vineyards
  • Orchards
  • Hazelnut groves
  • Olive groves

Our product line includes several models to meet every need. We offer the mowing wheel in two cutting diameters: 65 centimetres (25.59 in) and 90 centimetres (35.43 in).

The versatility of the Rinieri Swing Arm Mower is evident in its possible configurations:

  1. Attachment to a Flail Mower/Shredder: The most time-efficient solution. The inter-row mowing wheel can be mounted directly onto a flail mower (even non-Rinieri, provided the tractor meets the hydraulic requirements). This allows for both inter-row flailing/shredding and under-the-row mowing in a single pass, maximizing productivity. Products include the In and Out Mowing Wheel for Shredder RSI and the RSI 65 - Couple of In and Out Mowing Wheels Spring Loaded (compatible with TRU, TRL, and TRP shredders).

  2. Dedicated Frame (Bio-Dynamic Model): If the goal is to focus exclusively on under-the-row cutting, we offer Swing Arm Mower Wheels (swing arm mower wheels) mounted on a dedicated tool carrier like the Bio-Dynamic frame. This lighter, specific frame operates at an optimal speed of about 5-6 km/h (3.5 mph). The Solo Swing Arm Mower RSI on Bio-Dynamic is an excellent example of this configuration.

The machine can be purchased as a single unit with its own frame (the solo swing arm mower or in and out mowing wheel) or as an attachment to a flail mower. We offer both right and left versions, allowing the use of a couple of in and out mowing wheel simultaneously to work both sides of the row (e.g., the Swing Arms Mowers Wheels RSI on Bio-Dynamic DUO).

Tractor Requirements, Speed, and Maintenance

What tractor requirements are needed to operate swing arm mowers? Operating our machinery requires the tractor to be equipped with:

  • Three-point linkage
  • Rear lift
  • Available hydraulic controls

The machine requires an oil flow of approximately 35-40 litres per minute (9.20-10.5 gpm) to function correctly. Our mowers are designed to be compatible with different hydraulic systems and can be mounted on shredders from other brands, provided the tractor supplies the required oil flow.

When the machine is combined with a flail mower/shredder, the recommended speed ranges from 3 to 6 km/h (1.86 - 3.73 mph), depending on the height and density of the grass. With the dedicated Bio-Dynamic frame, the speed is around 5-6 km/h. This is a machine you will use frequently from spring through summer, especially in wetter years.

The maintenance of a swing arm mower is minimal. The bolted and pivoting mowing blades are designed for a long lifespan and typically only need replacement when they have completely lost their cutting edge—an event that occurs after years of work.

Setup, Safety, and Versatility

How do I set up a swing arm mower? Setup is quick: a simple mechanical height adjustment of the wheel from the ground is performed at the start of the work. The machine is activated via a diverter valve, a hydraulic control system. A critical element for safety and manoeuvrability is the emergency button. This control activates a ram that allows the mowing wheel to be retracted behind the implement. This allows for safe reversing and travel on the road without issues.

How do swing arm mowers perform on uneven terrain? If the terrain is somewhat uneven, the wheel with the hydraulic feeler bar is the best choice. Due to its greater sensitivity and adjustability, it handles ground irregularities better, ensuring a uniform cut even on hillsides.

What safety precautions should I take when using a swing arm mower? As with all agricultural machinery, the main precaution is to ensure that no one is within the operating range of the tractor and the rear implement, except for the tractor driver who is monitoring the work being performed.

Finally, the Bio-Dynamic platform offers extraordinary compatibility and versatility: the mowing head can be detached from the frame and replaced with other specialized Rinieri tools, such as a shoot remover (suckering unit) or a finger weeder, making your investment even more productive. Suitable for use in vineyards, orchards, and nut groves, the Rinieri Swing Arm Mower is the ideal partner for effective and clean weed management.
